Cal State University Monterey Bay is proud to host Startup Weekend for the Monterey Bay region each January. This is the fifth year we have bought this global event to the Monterey Bay region. Startup Weekend is part of the largest entrepreneurial community with over 193,00 past attendees a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs in over 150 countries who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures.
Startup Challenge Monterey Bay is a regional new business competition and acceleration program for entrepreneurs in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties. The Challenge is held annually, organized by a team of community volunteers and hosted by the Institute for Innovation and Economic Development of CSU, Monterey Bay. It is a competitive acceleration process that teaches, coaches, mentors, networks, and connects entrepreneurs to the knowledge and resources they need. Prospective entrepreneurs, start-ups and emerging companies showcase and develop their business concepts while competing for prizes. The Challenge provides workshops and mentoring to support the founding, funding and growth of new and innovative businesses in the Monterey Bay region. The event is hosted by the Agricultural Business and Technology Institute at Hartnell College in collaboration with the Monterey Bay Chapter of the CA Association of Pest Control Advisors (CAPCA). MBEP’s 4th Annual Regional Economic Summit will be held on May 3rd at the Mello Center in Watsonville.
Dr. Chris Thornberg, Founding Partner of Beacon Economics, LLC, who is widely considered to be one of the nation’s leading economists, will share his provocative insights on federal, state and local economic trends. As an expert in economic forecasting, regional economics, labor markets, economic policy, and industry and real estate analysis, he was one of the earliest and most adamant predictors of the sub-prime mortgage market collapse and of the global economic recession that followed. If you’ve seen him in action before, you know it will be another insightful and entertaining presentation.
Also joining us will be Morgan Simon, a nationally renowned leader in impact investment and building community capital. Over the past seventeen years, she has influenced over $150 billion in capital, and has become one of the most respected voices in her field. Attendees will receive a free copy of Ms. Simon’s most recent book, Real Impact, in which she offers guidelines for investors, entrepreneurs, activists, and everyday people to use their wallets to contribute to social change.
We will also be presenting our annual Public-Private Partnership Award given in recognition of an innovative project thatdemonstrates significant contribution to the well-being of our region.
