Join your fellow employers and EAC/CEAC members for networking and comradery before the conference begins.

Keynote Presentation: – “Message in a Bottle: Avoid Unconscious Bias” – James W. Potts, JD, CEO, Potts & Associates, LLC: 8:15 am – 9:15 am
James W. Potts is a 35 year HR professional, Juris Doctorate, expert witness, LA Talk readio host, author, former Master Teacher and Reserve Captain with the Sheriff’s Department. He fights on behalf of employers in front of the EEOC, DFEH, DLSE, DOL, EDD, and other agencies. Mr. Potts has a B.A. in history and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of West Los Angeles Law School. He is a certified mediator and expert witness specializing in employment law and workplace rights.
Workshop Sessions – A total of 6 workshop sessions will be offered and 1 all day EAC Coordinator workshop. Attendees may select 3 workshops of their choice. Please indicate the workshops you would like to attend on the registration form when purchasing your conference. EAC Coordinators will attend an all day workshop.

The California Employer Advisory Council (CEAC) Veterans Employer of the Year Awards recognize employers who consistently demonstrate positive policies toward U.S. Veterans in hiring and promotion, as well as through employee retention efforts, ongoing training, and benefits.
Employer winners will be honored at the 2019 CEAC Conference during the CEAC Veterans Employer of the Year Awards ceremony.

There have been several changes over the past year that you need to be aware of and understand. Hear about lessons learned from 2018 and employment compliance trends for 2019. Topics that will be highlighted include such topical trends as the compensation crisis, discrimination, new legislation and case law with practical applications to avoid potential penalties and employer liability in the coming year.

CEAC Awards and Recognition Program – 6:00pm (during Thursday dinner)
The CEAC will recognize those nominees who were selected to receive recognition for Distinguished Service, Outstanding EAC Chair, Outstanding EAC Coordinator, Outstanding EAC, and Outstanding Veterans Committee. All nominees have made California and their community a better place as a result of their leadership, dedication, and hard work.

EACs or businesses may wish to participate in the CEAC Sponsorship Program and can make a donation to the CEAC at various sponsorship levels (see below) throughout the year. Sponsorships assist the CEAC financially and depending on the sponsorship level, EACs or businesses can receive up to four conference registrations for the annual conference.

What: 88th Annual La Merienda Celebration – City of Monterey’s 248th birthday party features a BARBECUE BUFFET EXTRAVAGANZA by Old Fisherman’s Grotto Chefs and the VIP Merienda Barbecue Committee who will create a five-star culinary experience featuring Certified Angus Beef New York steak, BBQ chicken breast, mild Italian sausage, salmon, sauteed scampi shrimp, Paella, complemented by 3 salad choices: mixed greens, pasta, and fruit salad, fire roasted sweet corn, fresh-made chili beans, fresh grilled garlic bread, fresh-made salsa and more. Like last year, there will also be a NEW special culinary surprise! Included with the meal are complimentary wine, beer, coffee, tea and soft drinks. The mouth-watering feast is followed by the traditional outstanding dessert, a beautiful multi-layered birthday cake from Layers Bakery donated by Tina Del Piero and Lynn Tomlinson and decorated with fresh roses by Jackie Craghead.
This festive event includes Master of Ceremony David Marzetti, entertainment by musicians including Accordion player extraordinaire Mike Marotta, Jr. & special guests, mariachis, and folklorico dancers, gallant dons and donas, and lovely senoritas. The Barbecue Committee headed by Chris Shake is composed of local elected officials and well-known community members that prepare and serve the food at this event. There will also be a Silent Auction. All guests are also welcome to dress in 18th century costume (optional).
Congratulations to Marc Del Piero, the winner of the 2018 Laura Bride Powers Award, Monterey History & Art Association’s most prestigious award who will be honored at this year’s La Merienda. This award is named after the woman who is credited with conceiving both the idea of the Association and the Merienda celebration, which antedated MHAA’s founding. Mrs. Powers was the Curator of the Custom House and First Theater and an ardent student of California history. The 2017 Laura Bride Powers Award recipient was Joan Keyser

Parking: With the purchase of a ticket, FREE PARKING will be available in the City of Monterey’s WEST GARAGE parking lot on Franklin Street behind the Wells Fargo Bank. Your free parking pass will be given to you upon check in at the Memory Garden Gate as you enterLa Merienda. Additional paid parking is available in the Waterfront parking lot adjacent to Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf or in the parking lot on Scott Street above Pacific Street.
Tickets will go on sale on February 1, 2019 for MHAA members only; general public April 1st.
The cost is $55 per ticket for MHAA members before April 1st and it will be $65 on or after April 1st
MHAA members table of 10 for $550 before April 1st or $650 on or after April 1st.
Non-MHAA members may only purchase tickets on or after April 1st at $75 per ticket or $750 for a table of 10.
